REHABILITATION ACTION PROGRAM
WHAT IS RAP?
The program offers specialized services to the Tamil, Somali
and Afghan communities and has the capacity to serve members
of the culturally diverse population. Trained volunteers may
be used to assist with skills teaching.
Case Aides assist clients with activities such as: activities
of daily living, (shopping, cooking, laundry, cleaning) vocational,
finding housing, social recreation, use of computer etc. based
on client needs. HOW MUCH TIME IS REQUIRED?
Volunteers are asked to make a commitment of a minimum of 3
hours per week for a minimum of one year. The majority of the
time is spent in services to the client in the community.
WHO CAN BE A VOLUNTEER?
Volunteers are men and women with a wide variety of life experiences:
- Enjoy working with people
- Are 20 years of age and over
- Have verbal and written communication skills in English
- Are able to teach any of the following independent living
skills: budgeting, shopping, resume writing, use of public
transportation, cooking etc.
- Can make a commitment of 3 hours a week for one year
- Are able to work in Scarborough
The program needs volunteers from a variety of cultures with
fluency in other languages. WHO DOES RAP HELP?
RAP assists people who have been treated for mental illness,
are stable and live in the community. HOW ARE
CASE AIDES TRAINED AND SUPERVISED
Volunteers receive in-depth training in rehabilitation. This
includes classroom and field instruction. Training includes
various aspects of the role of volunteers, mental illness, communication
skills, problem solving skills, teaching activities of daily
living, safety and security awareness and cultural sensitivity.
Case Aides will be supervised by the RAP case managers on a
regular basis. The staff is available for support and consultation
during office hours. Rap staff recruit and interview volunteers
during August/September with an 8 week training module starting
in October, one evening a week. Download
